Most St. Louis suburbs sell summer as a general feeling. Ballwin's version is more scheduled than that, and once you see the pattern, the calendar plans itself. Wednesday evenings belong to one park, Thursday nights belong to another, and the whole thing crests over a single weekend in August. Here is how the week actually breaks down, and one trail change that has quietly rerouted the regulars this year.
Wednesdays: The Lawn Chair Half Of The Week
The free Summer Concert Series at New Ballwin Park, 329 New Ballwin Road, runs every other Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m., and the 2026 lineup leans local. Boy Scout Troop 310 sells ice cream, pretzels, and water on site, and extra parking is available at Woerther Elementary. If the main lot is full by 6:45, that is where the regulars go.

For anyone who prefers a brass-band evening, the Manchester Community Band programs Sunday shows a few miles east at Paul A. Schroeder Park, including a Hollywood Composers night on July 12 and a St. Louis Neighborhoods program on August 9. Different park, different tempo, same folding chair.
Thursdays: The Trail Regulars Moved To Castlewood
Weeknight running culture in Ballwin is anchored at Castlewood State Park, 1401 Kiefer Creek Road. The St. Louis Track Club runs its Summer Trail Series here on Thursday nights, tackling longer distances in the peak of July's sun and shorter courses as August evenings shrink. Races start at 6:15 p.m. from the Special Events area past the train trestle.
There is one detail worth knowing before you send out-of-town guests down to River Scene, which is the trail everyone recommends first. As of 2026, the wooden steps and portions of the lower Riverscene trail are closed due to flood damage; hikers are asked to connect to the yellow Lone Wolf Trail and loop back that way instead of descending the steps. The bluff-top views are still there. The old staircase down to the railroad tunnel is not, at least not yet.
A quick orientation for the trails that are open:
- River Scene Trail (upper section) — The signature bluff walk, roughly 200 feet above the Meramec, still the reason people drive out.
- Lone Wolf Trail — Short, steep, and now doing double duty as the return leg for River Scene loop hikers.
- Al Foster Trail — A gravel out-and-back on the old Pacific Railroad bed, flat and stroller-friendly.
- Grotpeter Trail — Steady elevation, favored by mountain bikers who want something less crowded than River Scene.
- Chubb Trail — The long option, running from West Tyson County Park through the park's middle.
Castlewood has more than thirty miles of hiking and biking trails, eleven of which are open to horseback riders. If you are new to the park, park in the second lot past the creek and the railroad overpass. The first lot fills before 9 a.m. on any Saturday in July.
Two practical notes the trailhead signs will not tell you. Kiefer Creek stays cool enough for kids to wade in even when the Meramec is closed to swimming inside park boundaries. And the mosquitoes along the river bottom in July are the real thing, not the polite Midwest version. Bring spray.
The Weekend Anchor Sits In August
Everything else in Ballwin's summer is warm-up for four days at Vlasis Park, 300 Park Drive.
Ballwin Days 2026 runs Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16 at Vlasis Park. Free admission. Live music, a Saturday-morning parade, a carnival, a Kids Korner, a car show on Sunday, and fireworks Friday and Saturday around 9:15 p.m. No pets or coolers.
A volunteer committee that exceeds 100 members plans and carries out the activities each year, and the three-day event historically draws more than 60,000 visitors. Put that against the fact that roughly 30,404 people call Ballwin home, and the math tells you what the traffic looks like on Manchester Road that weekend. If you live near Seven Trails or off Holloway, plan grocery runs for Thursday morning or Sunday night, not Saturday afternoon.
The under-the-radar piece of the weekend is the run. The Ballwin Days 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run kicks off the festival's last day on Sunday, August 16, with a course that starts and finishes in Vlasis Park. The last day to register and guarantee a race shirt is July 21, 2026. It is one of the few Sunday-morning 5Ks in the area where the after-party is already set up when you cross the finish line.
Vlasis itself is worth a weekday walk when the festival is not on. The park covers 31 acres and includes two ball diamonds, a playground, four tennis courts, two ponds (one stocked with fish), two pavilions, a walking path, two sand volleyball courts, and eight horseshoe courts. Pavilion #1 seats about 80 and can be reserved at the Resident Rate at The Pointe with proof of residency. That is the setup most youth-sports teams use for end-of-season parties in July.
What's New On Manchester Road
The restaurant stretch along Manchester has picked up a few additions worth knowing about, and they tell you something about which crowds Ballwin is drawing.
The one everyone is talking about is Melt n Dip at 15575 Manchester. The dessert concept, new to St. Louis and franchised by Momammad Ayyash after he first encountered it as a customer at the Chicago location, opened June 30 and has already become one of the area's hottest late-night stops. The kitchen serves until midnight seven days a week, which the owner picked specifically to catch the after-movie and after-work crowd. "We want to appeal to all kinds of people, and Ballwin has a diversity of culture," Ayyash told St. Louis Magazine. "There are large Muslim and Christian communities and people from all walks of life here. Plus, a lot of people pass by us every day on Manchester."
A couple of longer-standing anchors round out the stretch:
- Circle 7 Ranch, at 14412 Clayton Road in the Ballwin Grove shopping plaza, is the first venue in Missouri to offer Personal Table Taps that let guests pour their own draft beers at the table. Useful trivia when you are hosting a summer birthday and want the twelve-year-olds occupied without a screen.
- Marcella's Mia Sorella, the Komorek brothers' more casual sibling to Trattoria Marcella, has been serving in Ballwin since September 2012 and is still the reservation to have when in-laws visit.
- Bones French Quarter Bar and Grill at 14766 Manchester keeps the New Orleans theme running seven days a week with a full happy-hour schedule, which fills a gap in the Ballwin bar landscape most residents complain about.
None of this is a "top ten" list. It is the shortlist you would give a neighbor who moved in last month and asked where to start.
The One Weekend To Guard On Your Calendar
If you keep only one date, keep Friday, August 15. Fireworks at 9:15, the carnival in full swing, the shuttle from The Pointe area starting at 4:30, and the run the following morning if you want to feel virtuous about the funnel cakes. Everything else in Ballwin's summer schedule feeds into or out of that evening.
Two other dates worth noting outside the Ballwin Days orbit: the Beer & Bagel Run on Saturday, July 11 at Queeny Park, and the 8th Annual Heroes for Autism 5K and Mile on Saturday, July 18, also at Queeny. Both use the Greensfelder Recreation Complex as staging. If you have a family runner working through their first summer race series, those are gentler on-ramps than the Track Club's Thursday-night sessions.
